Who here has tears when chopping onions? Me!
I can handle a couple of them, but more than that? No!
I have a hack for you! And, it works! I’ve been using it for quite some time. In fact, I work in a grocery store deli and I have showed my co-workers this hack, and they are shocked.
No More Tears
Here’s the secret
- There are two ends, the root end and the top bulb end. We all know the root end is rough and usually has little root pieces protruding from it.
- Cut the top (non-root) end and peel back the outside peel back to the root and tear off all around root end, but do not cut.
- Take a sharp knife and starting at the root end at an angle, cut the onion in half. Do not cut through the root nor within 1/2″ of it.
- Cut through from the other side. You will be left with a diamond-type onion shape with the root end intact. This is where the natural chemical syn-propanethial-S-oxide resides. This “gas” stimulates the eyes’ tear glands so they release tears when this gas is released. More gas, more tears, unending cycle.
That’s it! Chop away and don’t cry ever again. You can chop many onions this way with no effect.
So, forget holding your breath, closing your eyes or any other method to keep from crying when chopping onions.
Even if you are just slicing the onions, don’t cut the root end and slice.
This is the one that works on onions!
If you have an onion hack that works, or another food hack, we would love to hear about them in the comments below.
